    Smyrna AME Church Singers will be our special guests. This group of ladies  is one of the    few remaining solfege singing groups in the area. Also known as Do-Re-Mi or Shape Note singing, solfege is a form of musical notation that facilitates communal singing without the need for members to read music.  Please join us for an afternoon of history and ”old – timey” songs.

The museum will host the Sanders High School Alumni for a period of “Reflections.”  Closed in 1970, Sanders was the African-American high school in Laurens County. All Sanders High Alumni are urged to attend and bring any memorabilia they may have to share with those in attendance.

The Laurens County Museum is excited to present “Adventures of a Confederate Staff Officer,” featuring Scott Robertson as Major J.S. Dorset Cullen, M.D., with Mark Watt as Lt. Col. John W. Fairfax. Both men were officers of General James Longstreet during the Civil War.

Major J. S. Dorset Cullen, M.D. (1832-1893), enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 and was appointed surgeon of the 1^st Virginia Infantry Regiment. Shortly afterward, he was promoted to Brigade and Division Surgeon before becoming o Medical Director of the First Army Corps of Northern Virginia. He helped retrieve a wounded Gen. Longstreet from the field during the Battle Of The Wilderness and was responsible for his care and recovery. Following the end of the war, Major Cullen served as Chair of the Department of Surgery and Dean of the Faculty at the Medical College of Virginia.

Scott Robertson, who portrays Dr. Cullen, was born and raised in Enoree, SC. He graduated from Spartanburg Community College, and has traveled extensively in his role as Dr. Cullen. He will speak on field medicine during the War Between the States.

Lt. Col. John W. Fairfax (1828-1908) is  best known for his service as Assistant Adjutant General for General James Longstreet. During the Battle of Gettysburg, he carried attack orders between Generals Longstreet and Hood. It has been argued that General Longstreet was the finest Corps Commander on either side during the Civil War.

Mark Watt, who portrays Lt. Col. Fairfax, is a native of Simpsonville, SC. Both he and his son are dedicated re-enactors.

Built in 1786, the home of Governor and Chief Justice William Dunlap Simpson is believed to be the oldest house in Laurens County. A book about Col. Simpson is also on sale at the Laurens County Museum. Proceeds from the sale will help pay for the historical marker.
