The Sheriff’s Office

A ball and chain, blackjack, and handcuffs speak to the consequences of a life of crime, but more than just law enforcement artifacts are on display in our sheriff’s office. We have a wide range of primary documents taken out of the old court house on the public square including sheriff dockets from the nineteenth century, a public sales book dating back to antebellum days, a farm loan book from the depression, and a historic chain gang book. The chain gang itself is present in a rare framed photograph, deputies posing with their guns. We also have a special display commemorating those in law enforcement who gave their lives in service to our community.
