The Textile Mills
From the late 1800′s well into the 20th century, textile mills flourished throughout the South. Laurens County’s five mill villages were thriving communities with their own schools, stores, and post offices. The museum’s collection of memorabilia from these mills brings back the humming of the spindles and the thrashing of looms. Displayed along side an assortment of mill hardware are framed photos of the mills, their employees, and original documents related to mill life. Textile League baseball is remembered with photos as is basketball. Did you know Tommy Lasorda pitched in Laurens County during the heyday of the textile league? Quite a few baseball players went on to play in the majors, including Bob Hazel who helped the 1957 Milwaukee braves to the World Series.
