“Laurens County -vs- Laurens County"
"The Civil War in Laurens County during the American Revolutionary War”
The Laurens County Museum Revolutionary War lecture series continues with local Historical and Battleground Preservationist - Durant Ashmore who will provide a lecture addressing the controversial topic of neighbors fighting neighbors.
There was a Little River Regiment fighting for freedom from the rule of King George, III, and a Little River Regiment fighting in support of the King. In at least nine battles and skirmishes within Laurens County, the County was divided in more ways than just one - The Patriot’s against the Loyalist incorporated cousins against cousins that stretched outwards from Laurens County to Ninety Six to Kings Mountain.
The Little River District Regiment of Militia was formed February of 1775, in Laurens County. Colonel James Williams was appointed as a Commander of this regiment. His family sacrificed more for the Patriot cause. Colonel Williams was killed at King’s Mountain and his sons, Daniel and Joseph, lost their lives at Hayes Station. His wife Mary and several other young children were driven from their home and were harassed by the Tory neighbors.
This will be a very interesting and educational realm about the division of families and neighbors that lived close to each other within Laurens County during the American Revolutionary War, hence a Civil War as well.
The Laurens County Museum is free and open for visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. Donations are welcomed along with the opportunity to join with a membership, honorarium memorial or a sponsorship.
