Back in grade school when learning to read, who remembers the “Dick and Jane” readers that was used? Did you know that Laurens County had a hand in the creation of the books? Our very own Robert Childress was the primary illustrator for these readers.

Nancy Childress, Author and Attorney and daughter of Robert Childress, will speak on her father, a known illustrator for his work in the classic Dick and Jane books for children, and about her genealogical research of the Childress family in Laurens County.

Mr. Childress, a Laurens native, actually studied architecture at Clemson and graduated in 1936. His paintings and clients ads are certainly recognizable by all and include Duncan Hines, Coca-Cola, Campbell Soup, Bird’s Eye and WonderBread to name a few. His works included the covers for several national leading periodicals and was commissioned to paint portraits of several Deans at Cornell University and the US Justice of the Supreme Court James R. Byrnes. The Norman Rockwell Museum acquired a permanent collection of his works in 2014.
